The Program is jointly operated by the:

	California Department of Public Health, Center for Family Health, Maternal Child and Adolescent Health Program

	March of Dimes Foundation, through a contract awarded by competitive bid.

Since 1988, this successful partnership has united the March of Dimes Foundation's prevention efforts with the State Health Department goals and resources, advancing the Program's mission of finding birth defects causes.

In l982, the State legislature created the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program. Subsequent legislation enables the Program to:

	Conduct research studies through interviewing and biologic sampling to identify causes of birth defects

	Maintain an ongoing birth defects monitoring program

	Track birth defect rates and trends

	Operate by contract with a qualified entity.

	Insure confidentiality through review of research protocols by the State Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects
